The main Engineering College "Government Engineering College" was begun by the Mysore Government in 1917 at Bangalore, later in 1965; the school was renamed after its author as "College Visvesvaraya College of Engineering". Three additional compositions were begun in 1946. When of Integration of the State, there were absolutely five designing universities (two under Government and three in private area) in the State.

By 1993-94 there were a sum of 47 Engineering Colleges in the State of which four were Government establishments, nine were supported and the rest independent. By 2008-09 Karnataka had 145 designing universities, which went to 187 out of 2010-11.
