Abdominal Surgery Specialists, a medical practice specializing in abdominal conditions and weight-loss surgery, gives advice to patients on how to identify and handle acid reflux. Acid reflux is not necessarily a dangerous condition but can be symptomatic of more serious medical issues. Acid reflux can be more common during the holidays, when people tend to overindulge. Even in its most benign form, acid reflux can be an annoyance, especially when people want to spend time with their families.

Dr. Nick Nicholson, one of the leading experts in this field and the head of the Nicholson Clinic, shared his observation.  “Sometimes patients can feel chest pain, a sore throat, or just a funny taste in their mouth, which are all signs of acid reflux.  Knowing what to do and how to handle this situation can reduce stress and contribute to a more enjoyable holiday season.”

The group’s advice is summarized in three major points:  Be Aware, Be Prepared, Take Action.

Be Aware - Know if you are prone to acid reflux, especially if you have had it in the past.  Acid reflux is a condition in which stomach acid escapes back up the esophagus. Symptoms include a sore throat, heartburn, chest pain, and a bitter/unusual taste in your mouth. Acid reflux is often worse in the morning because you’ve been lying down all night, which makes it easier for stomach acid to escape.

Be Prepared - Take an over-the-counter medication to negate acid reflux side effects.  Especially during the holidays, it’s easy to overindulge and eat more than usual, which can worsen acid reflux.  Timing the dosage of your medication can help reduce or eliminate symptoms of acid reflux.

Take Action - If you feel an acid reflux attack coming on, take action by staying active!  While it may be tempting to lie down after a heavy meal, walking around the block is an easy, effective way to minimize the impact.  The gentle activity will help the acid go back down into your stomach where it belongs.

“Like with any medical condition, if it persists, please see your medical professional,” said Dr. Nicholson.  “My colleagues and I at Abdominal Surgery Specialists would be happy to see anyone in our offices for a consultation and make the best recommendation for your specific needs.”
