Gallstones: Can They Be Prevented?

The founder and lead surgeon at Abdominal Surgery Specialists talks about gallstones.

Plano, TX, Sept. 15, 2016 – The gallstone is an organ most people go their whole lives without ever thinking about. If something goes wrong, however, this tiny little organ can be very difficult to ignore. The most common concern involves gallstones; small formations that can cause big trouble in some cases.
“Gallstones are not always preventable, but there are measures people can take to promote gallbladder health and health overall,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon of Abdominal Surgery Specialists, a part of the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “Proper diet is one of the keys to ensuring a healthy gallbladder. When its role is understood the reason for the need to eat right becomes clear.”
The gallbladder is a small organ that is connected to both the liver and small intestine. It serves the purpose of storing digestive bile produced in the liver. When people eat, the gallbladder releases bile into the small intestine to assist in the digestion of fat. Gallstones form when bio salts and cholesterol saturate the gallbladder, promoting the creation of tiny, hardened structures. These structures, gallstones, can become painful when the gallbladder contracts to release bile. This pain is known as a gallbladder attack.
Some people are able to function with gallstones present. In many cases, they create no symptoms whatsoever. Other people, however, will find the pain is unbearable, promoting the need for surgical removal of the gallbladder.
To promote a healthier environment for the gallbladder, it is suggested that people eat diets rich in fiber that are balanced overall. It is also recommended that crash diets be avoided, as well.
“Eating right is one of the best things that can be done for the gallbladder and the body in general,” says Dr. Nicholson says. “Should problems still arise, treating gallstones is the best bet if painful attacks get in the way of daily living.”
