Let Access for Students organise a needs assessment for the disability student allowance application

Access for Students will assess and help disabled students to succeed in higher education

Access for Students will provide an experienced assessor to conduct the Needs Assessment, which will identify the kind of support the student will need for the duration of their course. They will identify any training that may be needed for equipment or software before the course commences.

The Needs Assessment can be arranged with Access for Students directly once the funding body has agreed in writing for the Disability Student Allowance (DSA) need assessment to take place. The university or college disability advisor can help the student arrange for an assessment or contact the NLRAC and make an online booking.

The student will need to provide certain documents before the Need Assessment is to take place. The assessment centre will need the DSA confirmation letter, all relevant medical information and a completed pre-assessment form.

Once the documents have been sent to the assessment centre they must be informed of any personal assistance that may be needed during the assessment, including communication support. The student must bring a few examples of their written work such as study notes or essays.

One of Access for Students experienced assessors will have a casual and relaxed chat with the student and find out if they are having issues in researching for assignments, writing essays and note-taking to revise for exams.
The Access for Student qualified assessor will understand the difficulties and challenges the student has had to face which has brought them to apply for a DSA. They will find out how the condition has been affecting the student in areas of their studies.
“Our highly qualified assessors ensure every appropriate action is taken and will help and support the student in their studies. They will assist in any way they can to ensure the student will achieve their goals. If the student experiences trouble with the process our assessors can provide additional assistance and support if needed,” said Lauren Gardener, Director, of Access for Students.

At the end of the needs assessment, the student and assessor would have agreed upon a support package that will assist the student. The assessor will submit a written report to the funding body with the agreed-upon support package and a copy will be sent to the disability advisor.
Once the DSA needs assessment is completed, it may take a few weeks to receive the agreement letter from the funding body. The letter will detail the needs of the student, what support will the student require and what they are willing to fund to the student’s support requirement.

About us
Access for Students has assessment centres in Newport, South Wales and in the South West of the UK to assist disabled students to obtain a government allowance to further their higher education. The team of assessors will assess and provide advice to the student and work out what help will be needed to help them. The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) fund support to provide assistance to cover any study-related costs due to mental health problems, long-term illness or any other disability. After completion of the needs assessment, the funding body (Student Finance Wales or England) will determine how the monetary support will be granted for the student to receive the much-needed DSA funding.
