In an effort to equip fellow students with the essential skills needed for successful job applications, Southeastern Michigan University (SMICH) students hosted an engaging workshop focused on resume writing. This initiative, designed and executed by the student-led Career Development Committee, took place on 28th-Oct-2022 at the university's Student Center, attracting over 500+ participants eager to enhance their resume-building skills.
The workshop kicked off with a warm welcome from committee chairman who emphasized the importance of crafting a compelling resume in today’s competitive job market. “We recognize that many students feel uncertain about how to effectively showcase their skills and experiences, ”He said “Our goal is to provide practical tools and tips that will help them stand out to potential employers.”
During the session, attendees were guided through the fundamentals of resume writing, including formatting, tailoring content to specific job descriptions, and effectively highlighting relevant experiences. The workshop featured interactive activities, allowing participants to draft and refine their resumes in real-time with the support of knowledgeable facilitators.
A highlight of the event was the guest speaker Head Of University, a professional career coach with over 10 years of experience in the field. [He/She/They] shared valuable insights on common resume pitfalls and how to avoid them. “Employers often spend only a few seconds reviewing each resume. It’s crucial to grab their attention right from the start. The students also had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session, where they received personalized feedback on their drafts.
The response to the workshop was overwhelmingly positive. Many participants expressed gratitude for the hands-on approach and the practical tips provided. “I didn’t realize how much I was underestimating the importance of keywords in my resume,” said [Student Emily], a junior majoring in [Computer Science]. “The workshop really opened my eyes to how I can better present myself to employers.”
The Career Development Committee plans to host additional workshops throughout the academic year, focusing on various career readiness topics, including interview preparation and networking strategies. This initiative aligns with SMICH’s commitment to student success and professional development, providing students with the resources they need to thrive in their future careers.
The workshop is part of a broader effort at Southeastern Michigan University to cultivate a supportive learning environment where students can gain practical skills that extend beyond the classroom. “We believe in the power of peer-led initiatives,” said Committee Members, “and we’re excited to continue fostering a culture of collaboration and empowerment within our campus community.”
