Market Research Future published a research report on “Smartphone Display Market Research Report – Forecast to 2023” – Market Analysis, Scope, Stake, Progress, Trends and Forecast to 2022.

Market Synopsis

Most of the displays on the initially introduced smartphones were between 3 to 4 inches that were compact with a lower resolution and pixel density. At present, the customers demand smartphones with a high-quality display similar to laptops, having higher brightness, capable of displaying HD images and HD videos. The smartphone displays are categorized into resistive and capacitive. Capacitive screen is a control type display which uses conductive touch of a human finger. When capacitor display is touched, the amount of electrostatic field or charge passed to the point of contact becomes a functional capacitor. However, the resistive screen is made up of two thin layers of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) coated with indium tin oxide (ITO). When these two layers connect to each other, a voltage is passed through the system that initiates the touch process at the desired point. Presently, capacitive touchscreen display holds a larger market size than resistive type due to high touch sensitivity and high clarity.

There are various display technologies used in manufacturing smartphone displays such as TFT-LCD, IPS-LCD, OLED, and AMOLED. Thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) is the most commonly used display technology in smartphones that uses TFT technology to enhance the image quality and improve resolution. On the other hand, in-plane switching liquid crystal display (IPS-LCD) offers high-quality display with a better viewing angle which consumes less power as compared to TFT-LCD. However, due to high-cost IPS-LCD is utilized only in high-end smartphones. Additionally, organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays are much better than LCD technology due to its color reproduction capability, wide viewing angle, extremely lightweight design, high brightness, and faster response time. The plastic and organic layers in the OLED displays are thinner, lightweight and more flexible than crystalline layers in LCDs or LEDs. Active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED)  display is the next step in OLED display technology which controls each pixel individually. However, this type of display technology uses different subpixel arrangements that can reduce the image quality.

Growing demand for smartphones and tablets along with comfort and convenience features drives the Smartphone Display Market. However, high cost of OLED and AMOLED displays is expected to hamper the growth of smartphone display market. Samsung has launched Galaxy On8, a mid-range smartphone in the Indian market that comprises a 6-inch HD+ super AMOLED display with greater flexibility, high image quality, and better image resolution. Samsung has also developed an unbreakable screen for its Samsung Galaxy Note 8 smartphone.
