There are two types of water coolers: bottle-less and with bottle, they provide safe cool drinking water to the people and are usually installed in offices, public and commercial places. They fulfill the pre-requisite human need of quenching thirst through safe drinking water.

What are water coolers?

A container or a device which is used for storing water for drinking and keeping it cool is known as water coolers. They along with water storing facilities have a dispenser tap fitted through which the water for drinking can be dispensed. Water coolers are in many public places, schools, offices, and other commercial places. These coolers provide chilled filtered safe drinking water to the people in need of it.

History of water coolers

The history of water coolers dates back to 1906 when the first drinking water fountain was invented by Halsey Willard Taylor and Luther Haws. They invented the drinking water fountain primarily to provide safe drinking water as there was a lot many water borne diseases happening in those days. These drinking water fountains provided chilled water for drinking as disease causing microbes cannot sustain in low temperatures. They did not have the modern methods of filtration.
With passing years, the water coolers became smaller in size, light weighted, and their efficiency level too increased. The shapes and sizes of the coolers changed and various sizes and shapes are found today as per the requirements of the people.

Types of water coolers

There are mainly two types of water coolers. They are bottle-less and with bottle.
• Bottled dispensers are one in which the supply of drinking water requirement is met through large bottles of filtered water. In this type the sealed large bottle of drinking water is fitted to the water cooler and through the dispenser tap cool drinking water can be obtained.
• Bottle-less coolers are easy to use as they do not require any external storage system but the water is obtained directly from the water supply pipes or taps. It has a filtering process installed which filters the tap water properly and once drank from the dispenser people get safe cool drinking water. The biggest advantage of bottle-less water cooler is that it requires minimum maintenance, are not cumbersome, they are cheaper in the long run of use and are environmental friendly.

Types of filtration

As the water in the water coolers are used for drinking purposes, it is very important to filter the water properly. There are various types of water filtration such as: reverse osmosis, activated carbon, ultraviolet filtration, and ceramic filters. Depending on the quality of tap water or water of direct water supply people can install different water cooler types as some water coolers use only one type of filtration while others use combination filtration methods. The filter type needed depends along with the quality of water, on number of other factors like purity level, smell, taste, and other water contaminants.

The most common type of water purification methods used by water coolers is reverse osmosis. It is mostly used by the water coolers which are connected directly to the plumbing system. In many cases, along with reverse osmosis activated carbon purification method too is used.
