Three things you should know about odometer reading

Odometer tampering is rampant in the used car market, and you need to be alert to avoid ending up with a lemon car. The correct reading of an odometer is vital when buying a used car.

Furthermore, you should get the help of an attorney if you suspect that a dealer sold you a car with an odometer rollback.

Your vehicle’s odometer reading is very important for a variety of reasons. However, what if the reading wasn’t accurate or reporting the correct mileage? The following are a few facts about a vehicle’s odometer reading.

1 – The odometer readings need to be reported whenever a car is bought or sold. However, exceptions exist; vehicles aged ten years or work vehicles are exempt from the rule in many states.

2 – You should be aware of many terms when reporting mileage. Odometer reading is not the actual mileage. “Actual mileage” indicates that mileage is correct. “Not actual mileage” means that the odometer is broken, was replaced, or the owner doesn’t know the correct mileage. Finally, “exceeds mileage limits” indicates that the odometer has reached the counting limit and has restarted at 1.

3 – Any odometer adjustment should be noted on the title and the car’s body; most usually, it’s on the door panel. In certain cases, an odometer isn’t functioning properly and needs repairs. Repair shops need to put a sticker on the car indicating that the odometer has been corrected or changed.

We often hear car owners lament that a ‘dealer sold me a car with an odometer rollback.’ If the odometer was altered intentionally or the miles were not registered wilfully, it is possible to seek action if evidence to present in court is available. Consultation with a lawyer is important to ensure that information and details are enough to file a case. Law enforcement can be contacted once the lawyer gives the go-ahead.
