Why an unsigned car title could end up creating legal hassles for you

Before your new car breaking in, you should check whether the title is signed by all the parties involved. Title jumping is a serious issue and is considered a felony in many states. It could end up costing you a lot.

Have you ever come across an instance in which the seller forgot to sign the title? Have you deliberately refrained from signing your name on a car title to avoid paying taxes? Did your car’s previous owner skip sign the title? Perhaps a few more owners have. The process of transferring an open title intentionally is called title jumping. It is fraught with many risks for both the buyer and the seller; it’s illegal and a bad move.

What is an Open Title?

An open title is a car title that hasn’t been signed or dated by the parties involved in the sale. Typically, it’s the buyer’s information that is left out. Before you sell your car, the problem should be fixed at your local DMV. Title jumping is an illegal practice used to transfer an open title.

Undocumented owners enter the fray when you sell a car with an open title. Leaving a title unsigned might not seem a big issue but can give rise to serious problems, which could multiply if many people pass along the same open title. There could be attribution of taxes to the wrong person, and there could be many problems if an accident occurs.

There could be legal issues with open titles.

Assume that this goes on for a while. You own a car those multiple previous owners have not had titled to them. If the state ever realizes no complete ownership history is available, they can issue fines and fees to everyone involved. Furthermore, there could be legal action since money was stolen from the state by way of tax evasion. The state could also hold the parties accountable for avoiding licensure fees and additional assessments unlawfully.
