Autismbehaviorservices reveals How To Know If Your Child Has Autism
Autism is a condition that can affect a person’s ability to communicate, interact, or behave, and it can manifest differently in different people. The signs and symptoms of autism tend to appear during childhood, even as young as only a few months old.
If you are concerned about your child’s growth and development, you should become familiar with the common signs and symptoms of autism in toddlers and children. That way, you can get the help and support your child needs as early as possible.
Autism Signs and Symptoms in Children and Infants
Autism in toddlers does not always come with signs and symptoms. Many toddlers with autism can go through normal stages development for their first few months or years before showing signs of autism.
In infants and children under 2 years old, if there are signs and symptoms, below are some examples to watch out for:
- Zero or limited eye contact, smiles, or facial expressions
- Zero or very little babbling, waving, pointing, or reaching
- Zero or very few words
What are the common signs and symptoms to watch for in older children?
As children with autism grow older, additional signs and symptoms may include:
- Delayed speech or language development
- Avoiding eye contact
- Intense or unusual reactions to the environment, such as lights, colors, sounds, textures, smells, and tastes
- Persistent repetitive behaviors (examples are spinning, rocking, flapping, etc.) or meaningless repetition of words (known as echolalia)
- Not smiling or responding when being smiled at, called their names, etc.
- Preference for sticking to a daily routine and upset by changes
- Preference for being on their own and/or difficulties with social interactions
What should you do if you see any of these signs and symptoms in your child?
Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in helping children with autism. If you go online and look up “autism test child,” you will find that there is not exactly a lab test, such as a blood or urine test, that medical professionals conduct to get a proper diagnosis for autism. What you will find in your “autism test child” search instead are methods that involve observing the child’s behaviors, listening to the parents, and reviewing the child’s developmental history in order to make an autism diagnosis.
Your pediatrician can also talk with you and your child while observing the child’s behavior. If your doctor thinks that your child shows some developmental concerns, they will recommend that you see a specialist for further testing.
When you look up “autism test child” online, you will probably come across the terms ASD screening test, ASD evaluation, ASD assessment or something similar. These all refer to a method used to diagnose autism through questionnaires to be answered by the parents, observation of the child, and behavioral tests that involve various tasks and activities to gauge their decision-making skills and thinking abilities.
