Understanding what happens after a DOT SAP Evaluation is essential for any CDL driver aiming to return to duty. The process doesn’t end with the evaluation—it marks the beginning of a structured Return-to-Duty (RTD) program that’s required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
According to DOT regulations, any commercial driver who tests positive for drugs or alcohol must complete the full SAP process before resuming safety-sensitive functions. This includes:
An initial evaluation by a DOT-qualified SAP
Completion of education and/or treatment as recommended
A follow-up evaluation verifying compliance
Passing the DOT Return-to-Duty drug/alcohol test
Enrollment in a follow-up testing schedule (minimum 6 tests over 12 months)
“CDL drivers often think the SAP evaluation is the end of the road,” says a representative from AACS Counseling, a national provider of DOT-qualified SAP Evaluations. “But FMCSA compliance demands a full follow-through—drivers must complete each step to clear their status in the FMCSA Clearinghouse.”
Employers are also responsible for verifying that the entire process has been completed before allowing a driver to resume commercial duties. Failure to comply can result in hefty fines and liability exposure.
