Last Wednesday, Facebook announced that it would begin testing ads within the Oculus Quest app and said that the paid title Blaston from Resolution Games and apps from "several other developers" would be the first to include it. For many Blaston fans, that wasn't welcome news, leading to a wave of negative reviews criticizing Resolution Games for planning to test in-game advertising for which they paid money. Now, after a backlash, the studio has reversed course, saying that it won't actually be testing ads inside Blaston.

"We appreciate all feedback and thoughts on the Oculus ad test for Blaston and other games announced last week," Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm said in a statement shared with The Verge. “Some good points have been made, and we recognize that Blaston is not the best fit for this type of advertising test. Accordingly, we no longer plan to implement tests at Blaston.”

While Resolution Games won't be testing ads on Blaston, it may still be testing ads on other games — but it will be a free title, not a paid one. “Alternatively, we're looking to see if it's feasible to move this temporary little test to our free game, Feed! someday,” said Palm.

“We love this domain as much as the most diligent players do,” continued Palm. “If advertising in VR becomes as inevitable as it is on other platforms, we want to make sure that while we have the opportunity to start over and get it right, we do just that. We welcome any and all of your feedback so far so we can have a constructive conversation around this and create the best way forward.”

As my colleague Adi Roberstson wrote last week, there are still some big questions about Facebook's move to bring ads to the Oculus Quest app. The Resolution Games shift doesn't make the future of advertising in the Oculus app any clearer.
