ndia’s largest eye campaign, Nanhe Nayan 2015 supported by NMMC, Navi Mumbai based NGO One Vision Health and Research Foundation along with eye care partner, Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute, Sanapada will be inaugurated by city mayor, Sudhakar Sonawane on Sunday at CIDCO Convention Centre, Vashi - Navi Mumbai. It is expected to be attended by major dignitaries, politicians, various representatives samaj’s and principals from over 60 schools along with a few school children and parents, from across Navi Mumbai.

During the course of this 3 month long event, city based ophthalmologists of Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute (AEHI) along with other eye experts will check close to 60000 students from around 80 schools from all across Navi Mumbai.

Dr. Vandana Jain, Director of Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute mentioned “All common eye problems can be treated if detected on time. A survey of 5,000 city school children prior to the event has brought a few troubling findings to the limelight:

Common eye problems among children

· Diminished Vision – Due to uncorrected eye power, focus, alignment disorders such as squint, Vitamin A deficiency

· Watering – Due to blockage of tear duct, eye infection and allergy

· Redness – Usually due to conjunctivitis, allergy or lid infections

· More than 1 in every 5 children has diminished vision

· More than half are not even aware of condition

· 64% do not use glasses because of parental ignorance and are not aware of the difference of having 6/6 vision.”

Dr. Prachi Agashe, paediatric ophthalmologist added “The current lifestyles of youngsters, poor hygiene and malnourishment are equally responsible for poor eyesight. Children these days prefer TV, play computer games or are hooked to smart phones instead of outdoor activities”

This campaign is also aimed to project Navi Mumbai as a model city where no child will be deprived of right to perfect sight by timely detection and treatment.

In addition to the camps being planned, during the next three months training will also be given to teachers so as to help identify children with eye problems and speak to them about eye care and hygiene.
