The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most popular and lovable breeds in the world. Also known as the Yorkie, this wonderful little dog originated in Northern England, where it was intended to hunt vermin, such as mice, rats and other rodents. A small terrier could easily hunt down these pests in the mine shafts and mills. Their keen ability to hunt made them very popular for finding other animals, such as foxes and badgers. It appears that the Yorkies were cross-bred from various terriers such as the Skye Terrier, the Manchester Terrier as well as others which produced the the long-haired variety we generally associate with them. The breed was originally quite a bit larger than the ones we see today, and was down-sized in the selective breeding to obtain the smallest size possible, genetically.

Although the Yorkshire Terrier is indeed a terrier, it has become more of a fashionable breed for ladies to carry in a designer bag, and such. The American Kennel Club "AKC", has the modern Yorkie classified with the Toy Group and you will find them at the various dog shows under that category. The AKC first recognized the Yorkie in 1885. Description: The Yorkie is considered to be one of the smaller dogs in the Toy Group. It has a flat head on top, a small black nose and small dark eyes. The judges at the shows will be looking for teeth with a level bite and erect ears which form a "V" shape. Many times you will find the ears floppy, because of the breeder's lack of know-how in getting them to stand up. The legs should appear straight when viewed from the front. The feet should have black toenails with removed dew claws. The tail is standardly docked (at 3 days) and higher than the back. While tail-docking is illegal in much of Europe, it is customary in the US. The Yorkie is well known for its lovely shiny coat of fine silky hair. They don't shed as much as many breeds, so they are sometimes chosen for hypoallergenic reasons. They generally have either a silver, blue or black coat after their puppyhood coloration of black, tan or brown. The hair on the dog's head is usually tied up to keep from getting into the food and water dish and to show off their lovely faces.
