CSURES - Because a pragmatic approach offers less risk

Smoking, whether it is tobacco cigarettes, electronic cigarettes or hookahs, has many detrimental consequences for human health and what you need to know about its dangers is usually information that derives from thorough research. However, for individuals that choose to continue smoking, tobacco harm reduction takes a pragmatic approach by offering them the choice of less dangerous nicotine and tobacco alternatives.

CSUR, based in Glasgow, UK, is a frontrunner when it comes to research into the use of tobacco, cigarettes and other tobacco products known as Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), and smoking harm reduction. This multi-disciplinary research company also provides behavioural scientific support to companies that are applying for an MRTP, PMTA, or TPD approval.

Research that has studied the impact of smoking on the health and performance of adolescents warns against several detrimental effects that cigarettes have on teenagers, including nicotine addiction and associated risk of alcohol and drug abuse in the long run.

CSURES’ ultimate aim is to provide substantial evidence through research, that there are alternative uses of tobacco that are less harmful and that people's perceptions about the use of tobacco, need to be radically changed, to promote better health.

“According to research, around three million adults in the UK have used e-cigarettes since the product entered the market a decade ago, and although it is considered by many to be a safer choice than smoking tobacco cigarettes, research indicates that it too poses many health hazards. In an effort to encourage smokers to quit smoking, or to help those who cannot to at least switch from nicotine to less harmful forms of smoking, a different approach, known as smoking harm reduction or tobacco harm reduction, is needed,” explained a researcher from CSURES, Sophie Notley.

She added by saying that harm reduction is aimed at helping smokers understand the dangers of smoking, and to effectively reduce the effect thereof through alternative means. Tobacco harm reduction is also a crucial part of the future of tobacco cigarette and e-cigarette manufacturers.
While there continues to be widespread mistrust of the tobacco industry, research agencies like CSURES work endlessly to provide tobacco-product industries with substantial research evidence and data, so that they can implement the necessary harm reduction initiatives.

As a global leader in research on behavioural science in tobacco harm reduction, their offer a wide range of services which include analytical research, research and data for regulatory submission, presentation of research findings and research programme designs.

CSURES focuses on the facts and their website is brimming with information which is aimed at tobacco harm reduction. You can find out more by visiting their website or by sending them an email to [email protected].

About us: CSUR is a Global Leader on Behavioural Science in Tobacco Harm Reduction, operating from their base at the Centre for Substance Use Research Ltd in Glasgow. CSUR opened in 1994 linked initially to the University of Glasgow, and in 2011 CSUR became a wholly independent research centre focussing on a wider range of substance use issues and developing a large programme of behaviourally focussed regulatory science research assessing the contribution of ENDS in reducing tobacco-related health harm. Our team comprises post-doctoral researchers in behavioural science, experts in marketing, cybersecurity, and media. Our focus is on furthering the goals of tobacco-related harm reduction and assessing the public health impact of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) and our goal is to ensure that those working within these industries have access to high-quality behavioural research that can further their owns goals of reducing the harms associated with the use of combustible tobacco products.
