ADHD or Something Else?

Los Angeles – April, 2021 – Do you leave things for the eleventh hour? Do you keep losing motivation? Do you always feel you have to try harder?
Unfortunately, most parents and teachers often tell children that they are lazy or they have to work harder.
The question is – how can we differentiate between plain, simple laziness, or ADD/ADHD?
The brains of people with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) / ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) work differently compared to those who don’t have these conditions. Lazy people don’t try to complete tasks while ADD/ADHD people are not able to accomplish them despite trying. This can produce a great deal of frustration and eventually, lower self-esteem.
Signs of ADD/ADHD
Here are some common symptoms associated with ADD AND ADHD.
• Short attention span – ADD/ADHD people have trouble focusing on routine tasks (such as filling out reports or emptying the trash). A short attention span can make them completely forget about a task, or leave it unfinished, or do a careless job.

• Distractibility. ADD/ADHD people get easily distracted. They tend to notice more in their surroundings than others. Simple sounds (phone notifications), lights, smells, and movement in their environment may distract them from the task at hand.

• Disorganization. ADD/ADHD people often face problems with time and space management. They may be late or miss deadlines. They tend to have a hard time keeping things organized.

• Procrastination. ADD/ADHD people often put things off till the last moment. They wait to start a project till the deadline is really close or until someone else is angry at them for not doing it.

• Poor internal supervision. ADD/ADHD people tend to have poor judgment and impulse control. They may say or do things without thinking about the effects, and they may not be able to learn from their mistakes.

• Poor motivation. ADD/ADHD people usually feel a constant lack of motivation.
In a healthy brain, focus and concentration allow more blood to flow in areas, like the prefrontal cortex, that is associated with planning, judgment, organization, impulse control, and follow-through.

On the other hand, when people with ADD/ADHD try to concentrate, blood flow reduces in the prefrontal cortex, and the harder they try, the worse it becomes!
Treating ADD/ADHD
ADD/ADHD is treatable.
With integrated treatment, people with ADD/ADHD often improve. Integrated psychiatry treatment helps them overcome the barriers that make them feel lazy and start achieving what they want in life.
ADD/ADHD or other mental health issues can’t wait for the pandemic to be over. In these uncertain times, your mental well-being is extremely important and waiting until things return to ‘normal’ to seek help is likely to make your symptoms worsen over time.
