They are going to brag about all the jobs they are going to create and the millions of dollars that they are going to generate into our economy. They are going to tell us that we are now first class cities because we have a professional hockey team. Well, here are the facts. Multiple studies have shown that there is actually little or no economic benefit to our communities. The jobs that are created are low paying and seasonal. The money generated was there all along and is merely being redistributed. As far as making us a first class city, we were a first class city before. That's why they located here to begin with. So what can we do about it, how to react to the NHL lockout? Say "no" - it's as simple as that. The NHL is a business and as such has no right to public money. They are not going to repay it. They are the only ones who reap any benefit. Scream "NO" to your politicians. Do not allow any form of public subsidy be paid to benefit the NHL or any professional sports team for that matter. Do not vote for any politician who endorses public funding. The public money which goes to support these teams will be better spent and provide more economic benefit by improving our existing and future infrastructures. I know that when NHL hockey returns many of us are going to tune in again to watch on TV or to purchase tickets to go to a game. I know we will slowly come back to normal and buy NHL products in support of our teams just because we love hockey.
