A Guide on Motor Vibration

An important characteristic in virtually all industrial machines is vibration.

Vibration refers to mechanical oscillations about an equilibrium point. Increase in vibration beyond normal levels, may indicate trouble and the need for further assessment of the underlying causes or for immediate maintenance action.

Vibration testing is the process of applying a controlled amount of vibration to a test specimen, usually for the purposes of establishing reliability or testing to destruction. In practice, the test article is securely mounted on a shaker table or actuator, which may be operated by electro-dynamic or hydraulic force. Usually, hydraulic force is used at very low frequencies because of the large displacements involved, and electro-dynamic force is used where higher frequencies are involved.

Different types of Motor Vibration equipment are required for vibration testing. Shakers introduce a forcing function into the test article. This is done by electro-dynamic or hydraulic force. An electro-dynamic shaker is a linear motor. It is a moving coil in a fixed magnetic field.

The magnetic field is generated either by permanent magnets or a DC current in a field coil and audio power is provided by an amplifier of suitable rating, typically requiring about 10 watts of audio/pound force generated. Some type of signal source is necessary to drive the amplifier, and an accelerometer is needed to measure the vibration response of the test article. If the test article is large, multiple accelerometers may be used and the outputs are averaged. Other vibration equipment includes controllers that may be rack-mounted analog or digital computer-based instruments. They align the actual response curve, which is non-uniform, with the desired response curve.

Portable vibration testers are widely used in the automobile industry for conducting vibration tests on various parts and accessories of automobiles. Automobile vibration testing utilizes sine-on-random and waveform-replication techniques to accurately reproduce the actual vibrations endured in the operating environment.

Portable vibration testers are mainly used to test various automotive components like batteries, lamps, instrument panels, seats, fuel injection pumps, etc. to ascertain vibration patterns and levels. These tests are carried out to establish that the various components and parts will not fail under normal road conditions.

vibration analyzer is programmed to diagnose the most common mechanical problems of unbalance, looseness, misalignment and bearing failures in a wide variety of mechanical equipment, including motors, fans, blowers, belts and chain drives, gearboxes, couplings, pumps, compressors, closed coupled machines and spindles.
