[SYDNEY, 08/04/2016] – The Australian Institute of Eye Surgery (AIES) provides patients with small incision cataract surgery to improve vision. It is a common and safe operation with a high success rate. Small incision cataract surgery is less invasive than other types of cataract surgery, and allows patients to recover more quickly.
Cataract Removal
Small incision cataract removal is a commonly performed procedure. Patients are anaesthetised, and a small incision is made through the cornea of the eye. Once the cut is made, AIES says the surgeon passes an instrument through the opening to peel away the lens capsule.
After accessing the lens capsule, the team at AIES break up the cataract and siphon them out with a vacuum. An artificial lens is folded and inserted into the capsule, allowing a patient’s vision to return after it has healed.
As the name implies, the incision made during the procedure is quite small. The cut is just between one to 2.5 mm in length and does not require the use of sutures. This allows for faster recovery times for the patient.
Lens Implant
AIES offers two new types of lens implants to remove a cataract. The first kind is the Multifocal Intraocular Lens Implant (IOL), while the second is a Toric IOL.
• Multifocal IOL – Allows patients with presbyopia to focus clearly on close objects. Presbyopia is a kind of longsightedness usually caused by aging. Multifocal IOLs give patients clear vision in both distance and near vision following their surgery.
• Toric IOL -- Toric IOLs minimise astigmatism. Since irregularly shaped corneas typically cause astigmatism, Toric IOLs offset the distortion to allow for clearer vision.
AIES offers small incision cataract surgery and ocular implants to all of their patients suffering from these symptoms.
