Selecting a wedding celebrant considering legal aspects

When it comes to Australian weddings, you have the luxury of selecting a wedding celebrant to match both religious and civil ceremonies. Basically there are four celebrant types you can select under this category.

This is a celebrant who represents independent religious organization.

This type of celebrant conducts civil ceremony. He or she will be the celebrant for those who

believe in religion but prefer to get married outside the church.

He or she is an authorized person to conduct a religious ceremony. Technically they represent a recognized denomination.

An authorized official representing state to performs civil ceremonies.

Interestingly, since late 90’s there are more civil marriage ceremonies reported than the religious ceremonies.

Preparation

No matter if you want a religious or civil marriage, it is compulsory for you to check if the chosen celebrant is registered with the Government. They do not have the authority to become your celebrant and conduct the marriage if they are not registered. There is a documentation process pertaining to the marriage and it is important to pay attention to this procedure just like you are interested in your wedding film. Here’s the list of documents you need to process.

– Marriage form

Submit this from at least one calendar month prior to wedding day. This form carries the evidence of your eligibility to get married in Australia.

– Proof of identity

Australian born people need to possess their birth certificate while overseas born people need to provide their home country’s passport.

– Original divorce papers (only for relevant people)

In case you being a married person, you should possess original divorce papers or the death certificate of the previous spouse.

What should the celebrant do at the wedding?

Other than adding glamour to your wedding film, there are some important responsibilities for celebrants to carry out such as;

– Introducing them to the gathering. It helps the crowd to recognize the official celebrant of the ceremony

– Announcing the full names of bride and the groom to the congregation

– Reciting an official monitum. Usually this begins as “I am duly authorized by law to solemnize marriages”
