Ageing is inevitable, but there are many factors in your control that can make a difference in how your skin ages. If you’ve maintained a decent beauty routine through your 20s, 30s and 40s, your skin in your 50s will be in a much better condition than if you didn’t give it any TLC.

As you hit your 50s, your skin starts to go back to basics. It’ll love everything that’s calming and soothing and react to anything new (or harsh) that comes its way. This is also the time your body starts to experience extreme hormonal changes, setting off your entire body—including hair and skin—on a different set of reactions than normal. Mumbai-based celebrity dermatologist Dr Rashmi Shetty helps devise the perfect morning skincare routine for your delicate 50s skin.

Your skin’s daytime needs in your 50s

Your skin needs intense hydration when you hit the 50s bracket. The moisture level in your dermis starts to go down as your hormone levels fluctuate due to menopause. This means you require topical hydration in the form of creams, along with good-for-you supplements like fish oil and primrose oil. Your body’s calcium levels take a hit too, as its absorption slows down. It’s best to get routine body tests done to keep all your vitamin and mineral levels in place. Those who are already in menopause will notice their hormones going out of balance in the form of hair loss or excess facial hair, as their testosterone levels start to increase. You will need to visit your gynaecologist to help with this imbalance.

Post 55, all these concerns are coupled with water retention and hot flashes. Stay away from any sort of lasers or treatments that can irritate your skin and avoid photo-sensitive ingredients like retinae and skin-lightening creams that can have a negative reaction when used in the morning. If you’re putting on weight due to the hormonal fluctuations, don’t try to go on a crash diet or engage in rigorous workouts without consulting an expert. You will only be playing with your health and making it worse.

Your skin’s main concerns

Dry and dehydrated skin, irritation and sensitivity

The perfect morning skincare routine for your 50s

Oil: If your skin is oil-dry as opposed to water-dry (this is when your skin’s natural oil levels have depleted), apply a hydrating face oil like an almond or rosehip oil and leave it on for 10-15 minutes before you start with your daily cleansing routine.

Cleansing: Use a gentle cleanser that comes with moisturising properties and will soothe any kind of flare ups. Stay away from very harsh skin exfoliants.

Serum: Invest in a hyaluronic acid serum or one with AHAs to give your skin an extra boost of nourishment.

Moisturising: For your daily moisturiser, pick one packed with vitamins, minerals and protective properties. Your skin starts to oxidise as you grow older, hence the antioxidant ingredients like berries and vitamin C are important.

Sun protection: Always end your morning routine with a generous layer of sunscreen.
