Royal Fusilier's Tower of London reception is ruined after a fellow officer 'let off a fire extinguisher, punched a friend and URINATED on the historic gates'

A Royal Fusilier’s wedding reception at the Tower of London was ruined when a fellow officer let off a fire extinguisher, punched a friend and was arrested.

The Fusiliers have their headquarters at the Tower and are permitted to use the facilities for weddings and an annual summer cocktail party.

But their privileged access could be in doubt following the alleged antics of Lieutenant Phil Roberts on Saturday evening.

Lt Roberts squirted a water-based fire extinguisher at guests at historic the Trinity House, a protected building that dates back to 1796, allegedly spraying a 19th-century oil painting.

Guests at the wedding of Lieutenant Dominic Ward and Cherie Preston were swiftly escorted out of the building by staff and were forced to move to a nearby hotel bar.

The couple exchanged their vows at the chapel of St Peter ad Vincula within the palace grounds before moving to the Grade I-listed rooms of Trinity House.

Staff cut the celebrations short at about 11.15pm, however, fearing for the safety of the house’s priceless paintings.

‘He came running past the dance floor squirting the extinguisher,’ a source said.

‘The wedding staff turned the music off and the lights on almost instantly, shouting at the guests to leave.

‘The bride and groom were very understanding though.’

A source close to Trinity House told the Times: ‘For the bride and groom ... no-one wants to be asked to leave their own wedding reception but if an event goes in that direction, I think they understood.’

A friend led Lt Roberts back to his accommodation within the palace grounds but he then allegedly had a fight with the officer who had been escorting him, knocking out a cap from his teeth.

An army source said a Beefeater saw the scuffle and called the army’s quick reaction force as well as the police.

‘Phil Roberts gets taken back to the Tower where he punched a Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment officer, knocking out one of his front teeth, and the quick reaction force was crashed out from the Tower to resolve the situation,’ the source told the Times.

Lt Roberts was arrested and led away by police, arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was issued a fixed penalty notice.

An email from a senior officer to the Fusiliers also describes how Lt Roberts was caught urinating against the front gates of the Tower before ‘having a scrap with the bloke who is helping him’.

It is understood he met with his commanding officer the following day and offered to resign, but the offer was not accepted and the army is investigating.

An army source told the Times that the officer’s repeated apologies had calmed tempers higher up the chain of command.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told the MailOnline: 'Police were called at 11.45pm to the Tower of London to a report of a suspected trespasser.

'Officers attended and accompanied the man off the premises.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and taken to an east London police station.

'He was later issued with a Penalty Notice for disorder.'

The Fusiliers are one of the army’s oldest regiments and have been involved in every major conflict in the last 400 years.

The name comes from King James II, who ordered Lord Dartmouth to form an ordnance regiment to guard the artillery in 1685, arming them with the fusil – the most modern weapon at the time.

The modern regiment was formed in 1968 and its headquarters remain in the Tower but they have a regular battalion based in Tidworth, Wiltshire, with reserve battalions based in Durham and Newcastle.
