STORAGE & DISPOSAL INSTRUCTIONS OF FUEL

Posted December 2, 2021 by fastengineer

As discussed above Petroleum products are highly flammable and dangerous and therefore are important to take proper procedures when handling or storing them.

We all use Petroleum-based fuels and oils in our day to day lives to run our vehicles and to power our electric generators. We also use oils for heating and cooling purposes. However, these petroleum products can become very dangerous if not looked out properly. So it is a necessity to store and dispose of these fuels in a legal and safe way (as per the regulations set by government authorities for fuel oil storage and disposal of hydrocarbon oils and fuels) in order to ensure the safety of our family and for the environment.

Petroleum storage

As discussed above Petroleum products are highly flammable and dangerous and therefore are important to take proper procedures when handling or storing them. You should not come in direct contact with gasoline but if that happens, immediately wash your skin with soapy water to avoid any skin irritation. Also be careful and do not smoke or light a match until you are sure that all the gasoline has been removed. You should only use petrol for its intended purpose, which is as a motor fuel. Never use it in any kerosene heaters or lamps and never mix it with diesel.

Other things to be kept in mind are that -always keep petrol stored at room temperature and away from all heat sources, including the sun or a water heater. The tank should be tightly sealed to avoid spillages. Ensure leaving some room in the container to allow for expansion as the best place to store it is in a detached shed or garage and it should be at least 50 feet away from any ignition sources.

Fuel disposal

Along with the proper storage, proper disposal of these products are also important. Since these products are highly inflable, they should be disposed of in the correct and legal way. There are few things that should be kept in mind while disposing of the fuels such as never pour the fuel down the toilet, onto any land or down a drain. Doing so can become highly damaging to the environment, can kill animals, create a fire risk and contaminate water sources. If you are caught you might even incur hefty fines. So for the safety purpose various fuel disposal centres are made for old or contaminated gasoline and this is the best place to take any that you cannot re-use.
