The Link Between Periodontitis and COVID‐19 Complications

Furthermore, understanding the mechanisms underpinning the relationship between periodontitis and COVID‐19 complications is a promising area of research that may produce mechanistic targets, risk stratification and novel interventions.

A new study published ahead of time in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology has linked periodontitis and COVID-19 complications. Researchers from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that people with periodontitis were more likely to experience COVID-19 complications than those without the condition.

This study also showed that those with gum disease have a higher risk of developing COVID-19 complications. This condition can also lead to more severe outcomes, including ICU admission or death. This study is the first of its kind, and more research needs to be done to determine how to prevent it.

While this link is still early, it has prompted physicians at our Dental Implants Center to make appropriate diagnoses and initiate treatments for patients who have SARS-CoV-2.

The researchers found that COVID-19 patients with periodontitis were 3 times more likely to experience COVID-19 complications. They were 3.5 times more prone to needing a ventilator or intensive care and were 8.8 times more likely to perish from the condition. Our Fort Collins periodontist also hypothesized that the elevated risks of these two diseases might be related to the inflammation that occurs in the mouth.

Fort Collins Periodontics in Fort Collins, we understand that the relationship between the two conditions is important in ensuring appropriate care for COVID-infected individuals. Even though it's not clear how the COVID-19 association will impact the future of the dental field, our Dental Implants Center will always stay ready to provide the best service to you!
