Heritage is an industry leader in treating teenagers with learning and social disabilities like autism spectrum disorder, Asperger’s syndrome, nonverbal learning disorder, attention disorder or anxiety disorder. The Peers Academy mentors are residential treatment staff certified in the PEERS social skills model that includes the 16 areas of emphasis created to improve confidence, manage emotions and gain self-awareness.

Heritage’s Peers Academy provides results-driven and personalized therapy, first-rate residential care and on-going research and collaboration with a team of experts. They prioritize the children by establishing genuine relationships with boundaries and consequences.

The program enables students to realize their full potential using innovative educational methods, a hands-on teaching model and teachers who are certified in special education. Peers Academy uses the natural strengths of students to improve their academics and attain success.

Peers Academy helps students who are experiencing challenges interacting with others, creating healthy relationships and understanding social norms learn to recognize and understand how they and others respond the way they do. The program develops skills to raise knowledge of social cues and how to engage others appropriately. The staff also teaches kids effective responses that allow them to connect with people in various social contexts.

Students who participate in the Peers Academy often encounter problems with managing emotions. The program teaches participants to develop coping skills for better control of their feelings. They receive personal opportunities to practice these in an emotionally and physically safe environment. Within Heritage Treatment Center’s therapeutic and structured community, students communicate with others who share or have different interests and challenges that help them in the recovery process.

The Peers Academy teaches students how to manage their time and plan their daily routine. The program provides the tools students need to succeed and guides them on planning, organizing, and assessing the results of their actions. The staff helps them adopt habits that improve their confidence in their skills and to experience a sense of accomplishment.
