Mt. Juliet, TN – 13-March-2023: James Kenton has filed a corruption case against Tennessee, accusing its state government and officials of several crimes, including, but not limited to, violating his civil and constitutional rights. The civil case follows a criminal case against Kenton, dismissed in August 2021 due to lack of evidence.
After Kenton was illegally arrested, the state government seized his boat and land, a piece of news widely reported at the time. However, he won back that property after the dismissal, which local news outlets failed to report.
The roofing contractor was the target of a state-wide media witch-hunt allegedly reporting false information leaked by Detective William Decker Thorogood, a decommissioned police officer with a long disciplinary history. He was also caught on camera assaulting an innocent pedestrian in front of his family.
“I’m glad his crimes are finally seeing the light of day,” said Kenton while commenting on the detective’s latest indiscretion, “He has enjoyed more than his fair share of qualified immunity, a privilege that scares me to no end. It is equally frustrating and terrifying to me that an officer of the law isn’t held accountable to the same legal standards as everyone else. It’s why cops like Thorogood get away with lies, corruption, and assault for years before getting caught, and it’s one of the things I plan on changing through my petition.”
Kenton’s petition demands an end to police corruption in Nashville and has gained over half the required signatures. His petition and corruption lawsuit accuses Thorogood and Assistant District Attorney General Chadwick Jackson, the prosecutor in the first case, of many wrongdoings, including defamation, negligence, gross negligence, torturous interference with business relationships, emotional distress, and malicious prosecution.
It exclusively blames Thorogood for false arrest and imprisonment based on nine incidents of perjury on the arrest warrant and several more perjurious incidents on the police report identified by Kenton’s legal team.
While the case has a long way to go before entering trial stages, it is going through pretrial discovery, where the complainant and defendant see each other’s evidence and request information and answers to certain questions. The data asked by Kenton’s side is available to view online.
