There has been a 36% increase in domestic violence calls to 911 from Rhode Island in Q2 2020

Throughout the United States, the number of crimes committed has dropped in the second quarter of this year, a direct result of the coronavirus outbreak. Rhode Island State Police have also seen a considerable drop in their crime statistics changing from a proactive department to one that reacts quickly to serious offenses.

DUI arrests dropped from eighty-eight in February 2020 to forty-two in March 2020, a staggering fifty-two percent reduction in arrests. The same was seen with felony arrests which dropped from one hundred and forty-six in February to seventy-nine in march, a forty-six percent reduction. The two hundred and forty misdemeanor arrests in February dropped to one hundred and twenty-two in March 2020, showing a forty-nine percent decrease.

One of the areas that the Rhode Island police are reporting an increase in is with domestic abuse calls. Six domestic violence arrests took place in March 2020, compared to the seven the month before, but the number of calls increased significantly. In February 2020, Rhode Island had four hundred and twenty-eight 911 calls for domestic violence, this number shot up to five hundred and eighty-four in March 2020, a thirty-six percent increase.

John Grasso and his team believe the increase in domestic violence calls is a sign of the times we are living in. People are confined to their homes, they are worried and stressed about the impact of the pandemic on their health, their loved ones, and their economic situation. The more stressed families become, the higher the risk of domestic violence.

Blake Nolan, the Media Consultant for John Grasso, said “John and his team have remained busy in the second quarter with the thirty-six percent increase in domestic violence calls taking place. People have lost their jobs, they are following social distancing protocols by staying at home and this fuels frustration and anger. The team at John Grasso are on hand to provide their clients with advice and support from the moment they are first accused. Their goal is to ensure each client’s case is handled properly and professionally to secure a fast and fair resolution.”
