Rhode Island Introduces Extreme Enforcement Measures to Prevent COVID-19 Spread in 2020

Rhode Island criminal attorney advises the extreme enforcement measures taken in the state to prevent COVID-19 spread.

Thirty-two states have implemented a stay at home order of some form. This is to enforce social distancing which is believed to slow the spread of COVID-19. There are ramifications in place for violating these laws, as public health is on the line. Some states have introduced checkpoints and police patrols, designed to stop any interstate travelers and reduce the spread within their own state.

Rhode Island is one of the states that has resorted to the most extreme measures to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. This is due to neighboring New York, which has the most confirmed cases. New York residents have been pouring into Rhode Island in the hope of escaping the highly contagious virus.

National Guard and police have patrolled the coastal neighborhoods and have gone door to door looking for any New York vehicles. This includes stopping New Yorkers on the interstate and at train stations. This is part of the stay at home order which was introduced by Governor Gina Raimondo. The order requires anyone entering the state from New York to complete a fourteen-day self-quarantine to protect the residents of Rhode Island.

Some parts of the order have since been amended to require anyone traveling from outside the state to complete a mandatory fourteen-day self-quarantine. The new orders have police stopping vehicles from entering the state on interstate highways. National Guard troops can be found at bus stations and train stations.

Blake Nolan, the Media Consultant for John R Grasso, said “There are thirty-two states all across the country that have a stay at home order in place at this time. Violating these orders can result in hefty fines and even jail time. Being convicted of a crime at this point is not ideal, as prisons are already struggling with the number of prisoners and not being able to enforce social distancing.”

John R Grasso and his team have seen a surge in demand for their criminal defense services in the first few months of 2020 as people find themselves frustrated and growing tired of living under a stay at home order. This increases the risk of domestic violence and violating the current laws regarding staying at home.
