Choosing the perfect worktop for your kitchen can be a very perplexing exercise. There are a variety of materials available in various different prices, and it is difficult to choose one that best suits your purpose as well as goes along with the decor of your kitchen. If you are renovating your kitchen and making a considerable investment on it, you should keep in mind a few things before choosing worktops. Nowadays, most people want to opt for solid surface worktops. A solid surface worktop has the same colour and texture throughout. It is artificially made and is thus also called synthetic stone.

Worktops can be of various materials like granite, quartz, wood or solid surface worktops like Corian. The solid surface countertops come in a variety of colours and finishes. Granite-finish worktops like Silestone are a popular choice as they are very durable and sturdy. These are scratch resistant, are tough and do not usually stain. Ideal for use in kitchen or bathrooms, these are easy to clean and require very low maintenance. The tabletops are available in a variety of textures, from fine grained to coarse grained, both aesthetically pleasing. The pricing of the worktops also depend on the edge detail - the more detailed, the more costly will it be.

Wood worktops, which used to be very popular in old times, had become less popular due to environmental concerns and indiscriminate use of timber. Not to let the warm look of wood be wasted, synthetic countertops with wood finish have gained popularity as kitchen work surfaces. These worktops are available in various different colours and grain texture, require very little maintenance and are naturally beautiful. Unlike wood, the solid surface worktops like Corian are installed in such a way that the site joint visibility is unobtrusive, that is to say, the joints between the sections are invisible and do not require frequent resealing.

The Silestone worktops are quartz countertops which are mostly made of a mixture of the mineral quartz and a polymer resin. But they have the appearance of a stone work surface, like one made of granite or marble. These are non-porous and scratch resistant and very easy to clean and maintain. These are usually uniform in colour and do not need polishing. These have a strong resistance to heat and are also stain resistant. The solid surface worktops usually have a matte finish and come in different hues and textures.

Corian worktops or solid surface worktops were specially made as a work surface material. These were introduced in 1967 and immediately gained huge popularity in the interior design sector. These are usually made of chipboard with a MDF core, with an outer layer coating of polymer resin. Their thickness varies from 6mm to about 13mm. These have a great aesthetic appeal as they can be easily thermoformed and turned into any favourable shape. These are moderately durable and very versatile as a choice of worktops. Though maintaining the chic finish requires a tad bit of care, these worktops are very hygienic and a great choice for kitchen work surfaces.
