Modafinil is a wake-up drug developed in the 1980's. It is limited to narcolepsy but is widely used off-label with its stimulant effects and to deal with sleep deprivation. Therefore, many believe that it helps their mental and productive function. (However, comparing it to the fictional drug NZT in the 2011 unlimited movie is a huge exaggeration.) I can explain its benefits over other common stimulants such as: more potent and less addictive & more tolerant than caffeine or khat; lasts longer than nicotine; are less likely to change mood or produce ‘tweaking’ behavior than Adderall or Vyvanse; and much more legal and almost no side effects compared to methamphetamine or cocaine. In any case, there may be a higher stimulant than modafinil, but few stimulants approach the overall pocket of modafinil to be a long-lasting, safe, effective, invigorating, invigorating, stimulant, and therefore highly popular stimulant.

How should this medicine be used?

Modafinil comes as an oral tablet. It is usually taken once a day with or without food. If you are taking modafinil to treat narcolepsy or OSAHS, you will probably take it in the morning. If you are taking modafinil to treat shift work sleep disorder, you will probably take it 1 hour before the start of your work shift. Take modafinil at the same time each day. Do not change the time of day you are taking modafinil without talking to your doctor. Talk to your doctor if your menopause does not start at the same time every day. Follow the directions on your doctor's label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take modafinil as directed.

Modafinil can be a form of addiction. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or take it longer than prescribed by your doctor.

Modafinil can reduce your sleep, but it will not cure your sleep problem. Continue to take modafinil even if you are feeling well. Do not stop taking modafinil without talking to your doctor.

Modafinil should not be used in place of adequate sleep. Follow your doctor's advice about good sleep habits. Continue to use any breathing apparatus or other therapies that your doctor prescribes to treat your condition, especially if you have OSAHS.

What are some special precautions I should take?

Before taking modafinil,

Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are infected with modafinil, armodafinil (Nuvigil), or other medications.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Be sure to mention any of the following: anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin); Certain drugs such as amitriptyline, amoxapine, clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Aventyl, Pamelor), protriptyline (Vivactil), and trimontramine (trimontramine); certain antifungals such as itraconazole (Sporanox) and ketoconazole (Nizoral); cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune); diazepam (Valium); certain anti-depressants such as carbamazepine (Tegretol), phenobarbital, and phenytoin (Dilantin); monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, including isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar), and tranylcypromine (Parnate); propranolol (Inderal); selected serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (i) -Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane); and triazolam (Halcion). Many other medications may also interact with modafinil, so be sure to tell your doctor about any medications you are taking, even those that do not appear on this list. Your doctor may need to change your dosage or be very careful about the side effects.
tell your doctor if you drink or have ever drunk too much, used or have used street drugs, or overdosed on prescription drugs, especially stimulants. Also tell your doctor if you have ever had chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or other heart problems after taking a stimulant, and if you have ever had or have had high blood pressure; heart disease; chest pain; mental illness such as depression, mania (anxiety, extremely happy feelings), or psychosis (difficult to think clearly, communicate, understand the truth, and behave appropriately); or heart, liver or kidney disease.
you should be aware that modafinil can reduce the effectiveness of contraceptives with hormones (birth control pills, stains, rings, implants, injections, and intrauterine devices). Use another birth control method while taking modafinil and 1 month after you stop taking it. Talk to your doctor about the types of birth control that will work for you during and after your treatment with modafinil.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan a pregnancy, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking modafinil, call your doctor.
if you have surgery, including dental surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking modafinil.
you should be aware that modafinil may affect your judgment or thinking and may not completely release the sleep caused by your disturbance. Do not drive or use machinery until you know how the drug affects you. If you have avoided driving and other dangerous things due to your sleep disorder, do not start doing these activities again without talking to your doctor even if you feel alert.

note that you should avoid drinking alcohol while taking modafinil.
