Killeen, TX 2021: It’s time to spread the word – Killeen ISD’s free after-school tutoring service has expanded from math to include reading and writing.

The district’s 14-year-old Math Center is now the Tutoring Center.

It is still located at the Jackson Professional Learning Center, 902 Rev. R.A. Abercrombie Drive in Killeen and operates four days a week.

Certified KISD teachers provide free face-to-face tutoring for fourth- through 12th-graders from 5 to 7 p.m. for elementary students and from 5 to 8 p.m. for secondary students Monday through Thursday.

Students may also seek virtual tutoring with certified instructors.

Information is available on the school district website at https://www.killeenisd.org/tutoring.

Students may receive assistance with math, writing and reading, including help with schoolwork and preparation for STAAR and End-Of-Course exams.

Students may attend anytime during the scheduled session and stay as long or as briefly as they desire.

Trimmier Elementary School Assistant Principal Harriet Wrabetz continues to coordinate the center.

On Monday, she and a few extra tutors rolled out additional supplies, expanding the number of classrooms along the same JPLC hallway that has accommodated math tutoring for many years.

Among the first educators to apply to tutor for reading and writing was Eastern Hills Middle School Librarian Lashawnda Franklin.

“I’ve been teaching 11 years and I’ve always been jealous of the math center,” she said with a laugh as she awaited her first tutoring student at the expanded center.

“I’m a librarian now. I’m excited to get to teach one-on-one and help students with their literary skills.”

She shared a classroom with Smith Middle School English teacher Margaret Fulcher, also excited to get to work face-to-face with students looking for assistance.

Students are welcome, Fulcher said, to work on STAAR preparation, to get assistance with schoolwork and to use available resources to improve literary skills.

She expects middle school and high school students will find the tutoring center helpful when writing essays. Tutors can access web-based resources for any grade level.

“All teachers are working on essays,” she said. “This is a resource that can help. It’s great to have a place for help after school hours.”
