Die meisten kompakten Gamer-Laptops sind 15,6 Zoll groß. XMG geht mit seinem Mittelklasse-Modell einen anderen Weg und verbaut ein 14-Zoll-Display. Doch gerade diese Kompaktheit kommt dem Notebook sehr zu Gute – vor allem, wenn Ihr einen Laptop sucht, der nicht viel Platz vom Schreibtisch wegnimmt. Die Anschlüsse fallen sehr üppig aus: Es gibt zwei Mini-Display-Ports, vier USB-Ports, davon einer Typ C mit USB 3.1 Gen 2, LAN, HDMI, SD-Karten-Leser, S/PDIF sowie ein separater Kopfhörerausgang und Mikrofoneingang. Insgesamt wiegt der Laptop nur 2,1 Kilogramm. Mit der verbauten Grafikkarte von Nvidia, der GTX 1050 Ti, lassen sich die grafisch anspruchsvollen Spiele auf mittleren oder hohen Einstellungen spielen. Preislich richtet sich das XMG P407 an die Spieler mit einem vergleichsweise kleineren Geldbeutel und ruft etwa 1500 Euro auf.

Nur 1,8 Kilogramm wiegt der Mittelklasse-Laptop zum Zocken von MSI. Der matte Bildschirm löst mit Full-HD auf, die Tastatur eignet sich auch zum längeren Tippen und die Performance beim Spielen kann sich sehen lassen. Auch hier ist Nvidias 1050 Ti verbaut, die zwar keine Ultra-Grafikeinstellungen schafft, bei mittleren oder hohen Settings aber alles im Test flüssig dargestellt hat. Probleme gibt es beim Upgraden des Daten- oder Arbeitsspeichers. Ihr müsst dafür das Garantiesiegel entfernen und sogar das komplette Mainboard ausbauen, um an die Speicher zu gelangen. Leider erzeugt der Laptop unter Last auch einen störenden hohen Pfeifton, der leise Stellen im Spiel sogar übertönen kann. Doch für knapp 1800 Euro erhaltet Ihr dennoch ein leistungsfähiges Notebook, das Ihr zum Arbeiten und auch zum Zocken verwenden könnt.

Besonderheit der zur Wahl gestellten Core i5-8250U und Core i7-8550U (Test) aus der Kaby-Lake-Refresh-Familie (Kaby Lake-R) sind die erstmals in der U-Serie gebotenen vier anstatt wie bisher zwei CPU-Kerne einschließlich Hyper-Threading bei einer im Vergleich zu den jeweiligen Vorgängern unveränderten TDP von 15 Watt. Bei der integrierten Grafikeinheit handelt es sich unverändert um die bei Kaby Lake verbaute Variante, die sich wiederum mit Ausnahme des Videoprozessors nicht von der in Skylake unterscheidet. Lediglich die Taktraten hat Intel bei einigen Modellen gegenüber dem Vorgänger um 50 oder 100 MHz anheben können. Und die Bezeichnung wechselt von HD 620 auf UHD 620.
