Das Smartphone ist das neue Flaggschiff des chinesischen Herstellers und gewissermaßen der Nachfolger des Ascend Mate 7 aus dem Vorjahr. Als ganz besonderes Ausstattungsmerkmal hat Huawei dem Mate S ein drucksensitives Touchscreen spendiert und kommt damit Apple zuvor, die bei der iPhone 6s Generation auch ein sogenanntes Force Touch Display verbauen sollen. Ganz gleich ob nun mit oder ohne Drucksensoren, das Mate S kommt immer mit einem 5,5 Zoll großen Bildschirm mit Super-AMOLED-Technik und Full-HD-Auflösung daher. Das gesamte Chassis ist eine elegante Metall-Unibody-Konstruktion und sowohl Front als auch Rückseite sind dezent gewölbt. Bei dem Modell mit drucksensitivem Touchscreen lassen sich durch festeres Drücken andere Aktionen auslösen als durch leichtes Antippen. Im Detail hat Huawei das Feature allerdings nicht erklärt.Exakte Informationen liegen hingegen über Abmessungen, Gewicht und die Hardware im Gehäuse des Mate S vor. Das Smartphone wiegt 156 Gramm, misst 75,4 × 149,9 × 7,20 Millimeter und wird von dem von Huawei in Eigenregie entwickelten SoC HiSilicon Kirin 935 angetrieben. Darüber hinaus verfügt es über 3 Gigabyte RAM, 32 GByte Flash-Speicher, der sich via microSD-Karte zusätzlich erweitern lässt, sowie einen 2700-mAh-Akku.Auf der Rückseite das neuen Huawei-Flaggschiffs sitzt eine 13-Megapixel-Kamera, die einen RGBW-Bildsensor und optischen Bildstabilisator zu bieten hat. Beides soll für bessere Aufnahmen unter schlechten Belichtungsverhältnissen sorgen. Zudem ist ein Dual-LED-Blitz verbaut. Unterhalb des Kameramoduls sitzt ein Fingerabdrucksensor, bei dem es sich laut Hersteller um eine Weiterentwicklung der im Ascend Mate 7 verbauten Version handelt. Fingerabdrücke sollen noch schneller erkannt werden und auf Wunsch können über den Sensors jetzt auch bestimmte Aktionen ausgelöst werden. Die Frontkamera kommt mit 8-Megapixel-Sensor und einfachem LED-Blitzlicht.

Eine weitere Neuerung im Vergleich zu älteren Xperia Z Modellen ist der Fingerabdrucksensor, den Sony in den An/Aus-Schalter der gesamten Z5-Familie integriert hat. Da auf den Smartphones aber zunächst noch Android 5.1 Lollipop vorinstalliert sein wird, müssen sich Nutzer bis zur Veröffentlichung eines Updates auf das vor der Tür stehende Android 6.0 Marshmallow gedulden, bevor der Fingerabdrucksensor auch nativ vom Betriebssystem unterstützt wird.Laut Sony werden das Xperia Z5 (in den Farben Graphit-Schwarz, Silber-Weiß, Matt-Gold und Tannen-Grün) und das Xperia Z5 Compact (in den Farben Schwarz, Weiß, Gelb und Koralle) ab Oktober 2015 für einen empfohlenen Verkaufspreis von 699 respektive 549 Euro im Handel erhältlich sein. Das Xperia Z5 Premium mit 4K-Display soll etwas später, im November 2015, in den Farbenvarianten Schwarz, Chrom und Gold auf den Markt kommen und dann 799 Euro kosten.
