Eine der größten Quellen für hochauflösende Inhalte sind allerdings auch die Nutzer selber. Nicht wenige Camcorder oder Actioncams wie die GoPro nehmen in 4K auf, viele Smartphones beherrschen 4K und digitale Fotos kommen schon seit Ewigkeiten in weit höheren Auflösungen als 8 Megapixel. Von der Festplatte, einem Stick oder drahtlos per Google Cast kann man diese Inhalte über Shield ganz einfach auf den großen Schirm werfen. Warum Apple TV daher trotzdem nur 1080p Anbindung bietet, wirft Fragen auf. Selbst wenn die Durchdringung von Endgeräten derzeit noch zu wünschen übrig lässt, in zwei oder drei Jahren sieht das anders aus womit Shield als zukunftsicherer gilt. Es gibt mit Geforce Now sogar noch einen vielversprechenderen Ausblick.

Serien, Filme, Youtube Streams und selber erstellte Inhalte sind mittlerweile gebräuchlich auf mobilen Endgeräten, Shield kann sich aber auch mit dem Heim-PC oder gar einer Nvidia Grid Serverfarm verbinden, um Spiele in noch besserer Optik auf den Fernseher zu bringen. Die kleine Boxselber verbraucht bei fordernden Android Games nur bis zu 20 Watt, den Leistungshunger moderner Games stillt dann entweder die Nvidia Geforce GTX Grafikkarte im Heimrechner oder aber ein Verbund von Nvidia GPUs, deren Berechnungen in Echtzeit über das Internet gestreamt werden. Geforce Now nennt sich dieses als Grid zur CES 2013 vorgestellte Cloud Gaming nun. Die Eingaben wandern über den Shield Controller drahtlos zur Konsole, von dort über eine Internetleitung mit vorzugsweise 50 Mbit/s oder mehr Bandbreite zur GPU-Farm in Frankfurt, wo dann das Bild gerendert und über das Netz auf den Bildschirm geschickt wird. "Konsolenspieler werden keine Latenz bemerken", behauptet Nvidia und wir können das als normale Gamer bestätigen. E-Sportler und Hardcore Gamer könnten das natürlich anders beurteilen.

Wo liegt dann der Vorteil von Shield Android TV? Es ist sofort startklar. Keine 50 GB Downloads, Patches, Treiberanpassungen... Nach nur 30 Sekunden ist man im Spiel, weswegen Grid nun auch Geforce Now heißt. Für die HD-Auflösung von 1.280 x 720 Pixel sollte man schon 10 Mbit/s Bandbreite bieten können, für FullHD bei 60 FPS empfiehlt Nvidia mindestens 30 Mbit/s. Meldet man sich vom Gaming on Demand Spiele Service ab, werden alle Savegames für 5 Jahre bei Nvidia gespeichert. Man kann natürlich auch PC Spiele per GameStream auf den Fernseher streamen, dass man keinen High-End PC oder ein starkes Notebook für FullHD Gaming in guter Optik braucht, ist jedoch ein weiterer Vorteil von Shield Android TV. Ob und wann die Nvidia Konsole mit 4K-Gaming auch die Xbox One und Playstation 4 aussticht, können wir nicht sagen. Dieses optische Upgrade könnte aber durchaus noch in den Lebenszyklus dieser beiden Spielekonsolen fallen. Vorort haben wir Geforce Now zumindest kurz testen dürfen und bemerkten keine Ruckler oder Latenzen. Wir sind natürlich gespannt auf einen ausführlicheren Test.
