Atlanta, GA - The Atlanta, GA based organization Rise Up & Care is pleased to announce the awards of expansion grants to six local organizations in the marginalized communities (favelas) of Rio de Janeiro. Rise Up & Care expansion grants allow each organization to further their successful work with young people. All these organizations have been engaged for more than a decade in activities that use performance to inspire youth.

The organizations receiving awards are Miratus Badminton Association in Chacrinha (Jacarepaguá), Nós do Morro in Vidigal, Cinema Nosso in Lapa, Crescer e Viver in Praça Onze, Jongo da Serrinha in Madureira, and Redes de Maré in Maré. Each organization was selected after an extensive vetting process including multiple personal visits of the Rise Up & Care directors.

“All of the news coming out of Brazil right now is negative from Zika to corruption to recession. However, at the ground level there is a lot of great news in Rio de Janeiro with an expanding civil society and some of the most impressive local social organizations and courageous leaders that we have ever encountered.” said Kirk Bowman, Rise Up & Care Co-founder.

All these organizations are directed by established leaders with a long record of successfully transforming the lives of young people. Each organization uses high-level performance in sports, education, or the performing arts to motivate and train young people in their communities.
