Thor Halvorssen Mendoza Discusses ICCPR

Thor Halvorssen Mendoza, the leader of the Human Rights Foundation, discusses the impact of the ICCPR on that organization and how the agreement has guided the HRF's founding principles.

Thor Halvorssen Mendoza is the founder and CEO of several humanitarian groups, including the Human Rights Foundation or HRF. This non-partisan and non-profit group promotes global human rights by standing up for those who are political prisoners as well as by advocating for changes in existing laws. Now, Halvorssen discusses the impact of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights or ICCPR, a 1976 agreement promoted by the United Nations and entered into by many countries that want to protect human rights.

"The ICCPR has guided our founding principles at the Human Rights Foundation," says Halvorssen. "We want to be sure that everyone in the world is protected by basic human rights, including the right to life and the right to fair judicial process before imprisonment. We also want to be sure that those countries that consistently violate human rights do not have an opportunity to do so in secret. Therefore, much of our focus is on upholding and maintaining the standards and the transparency demanded by the ICCPR."

Thor Halvorssen Mendoza, as seen at http://self.gutenberg.org/articles/thor_halvorssen_mendoza , understands the problems created by violations of human rights. Both of his parents were victims of human rights violations, so this cause is very close to his heart. "I want to be sure that no matter what happens, everyone is afforded the same basic rights and is free to pursue their own economic and political future without interference from the governments of their own or other countries," says Halvorssen.
