Repairing the faucet on your tub and shower does not have to mean a huge plumbing bill.

Repairing the faucet on your tub and shower does not have to mean a huge plumbing bill. Instead, dig out a wrench and some screwdrivers and attempt this task yourself. You can purchase a repair kit at any home improvement store that will include the washers, bearings or screws that you may need for your make and model faucet.
Go to the basement or utility closet and locate the main water shut off valve for the home. Turn it to the right to close it. Return the tub and turn the faucet on to drain any water still in the line.
Remove the handle. Start with the set screw, which is a small screw holding the handle in place. Sometimes there is a small plastic cap covering the screw that must be pried off first. Once the set screw is unscrewed and released, the handle should smoothly pull off the faucet stem.
Replace the washers. Directly underneath the handle will be a small rubber doughnut-shaped washer. Pry this out with the flat edge of a screwdriver. Replace the washer with one from your faucet repair kit.
Locate the nut holding the shower faucet stem to the water pipe coming from the wall. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten this nut.
Reassemble the faucet. Slide the handle or knob back onto the stem. Replace and tighten the set screw. Replace any decorative caps.
Turn the water back on at the main shut off valve. Test repaired faucet.
