[Ogden, September 19, 2016] – Lindquist Mortuaries and Cemeteries, a funeral and cemetery provider based in Ogden, provides burial flags for veterans. The folding and presentation of a United States flag to the loved ones of the deceased is part of the basic Military Funeral Honors ceremony sanctioned by the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA).

Memorialization for Veterans

The burial flag honors the memory of a veteran’s military service to their country. It will drape the casket or accompany the urn of deceased veterans who honorably served in the Armed Forces. According to Lindquist Mortuaries and Cemeteries, VA grants burial flags for the following:

• A veteran who served during a war;
• A veteran who served on active duty after May 27, 1941;
• A veteran who served after January 31, 1955;
• A peacetime veteran discharged or released before June 27, 1950;
• Certain individuals who served in the organized military forces of the Commonwealth of the Philippines while in service of the U.S. Armed Forces and who died on or after April 25, 1951;
• And certain former members of the Selected Reserves.

Keepsake for the Next-of-Kin

A deceased veteran’s next-of-kin receives the burial flag as a keepsake after the funeral service. When the deceased has no next-of-kin, however, VA turns the flag over to a friend making a request for it. Alternatively, the family of a veteran buried in a national cemetery with an Avenue of Flags may donate the burial flag “to be flown on patriotic holidays.”

Families of deceased veterans may apply for the flag by completing VA Form 27-2008, Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes and, with the help of a funeral director, get it at a VA regional office or U.S. Post Office.

Lindquist Mortuaries and Cemeteries may issue one flag for every veteran’s funeral.
