The flax plant has been around for ages | Linenshed UK

While the modern world is in total awe of the many benefits that the natural fibres of the flax plant deliver in the form of woven linen, it is important to remember that linen has been around for ages and that we are now merely awakening to the numerous benefits it brings. These are the words of Baudouin Deboulle, manager at Linenshed UK, a leading online provider of the most exquisite linen products from bedsheets in linen to linen table linen and even clothes.

Deboulle expands then on how the use of linen for household fabrics date back to the time of ancient Mesopotamia. “One of the more recent reminders that we have of how long linen has been around being the fact the dyes linen fibres were recently found in a prehistoric cave in Georgia. Scientists believe that these fibres are roughly 36,000 years old. Not only is this a testimony for how long linen has been around but also how durable these fibres are,” Deboulle states.

She then states that while the flax plant from which they take fibres to weave the linen fabric grows quite fast, especially if you compare it to cotton, the other natural alternative to fabric weaving. When it comes to linen, the entire plant is also usable in the weaving process where only a very little part of the cotton plant is suitable for weaving textiles.

If this is the case, we wanted to know why is linen pricier then? “Flaxseed fibres are not elastic at all and this does make the weaving process more challenging. While the plant fibres have many benefits that can contribute to your overall wellbeing, it is also a challenging fibre to create good quality linen fabric from. This is why it is so much more expensive and why even dating back to the ancient times, it was the kind of fabric you would only see the wealthy wear,” Deboulle explains.

Another interesting fact about linen and the entire weaving process is that the time in history when the world processed the largest amount of flaxseed fibres into linen was during the Victorian age. This was a time when an appreciation for the finer things in life was enjoying major interest. The centre of this linen industry was Belfast as this was the setting where they produced the majority of the world’s linen supplies.

Today, linen is as much of a sought-after fabric and it is simply impossible to put a true monetary price tag to the many benefits this fabric holds.
