PAIN Pain is derived from Latin poena, meaning pain. The International Pain Study Association (IASP) defines pain as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or described in terms of, actual or potential tissue damage." This definition clearly shows that pain has an emotional aspect associated with it. The defition also focuses on the protective role of pain as it can occur even in the presence of potential tissue damage, thus acting as a signal that the body part or whole body is in some form of distress.
