An Expert’s Guide To Technical Writing For Budding Writers

Posted June 22, 2022 by madrigalcomm

Last week, we attended an international technical writing workshop led by some well-known names in the industry. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to converse with an expert in the writing industry, Tim Entwisle from Madrigal Communications.

Entwisle has worked on an extensive range of technical writing and business communications projects with over three decades of experience. Entwisle has partnered with several large corporations, small businesses, and government organisations. Most recently, he is a director of a specialist copywriting agency in NSW.

We asked Entwisle about his approach to technical writing and he was kind enough to share his expertise.

“Many budding writers often think technical writing is similar to creative writing. They are completely different! There is no artistic format or complex storytelling involved in technical writing. It factual and straightforward.”, says the expert.

Entwisle continues, “I suggest new writers should try to step into the audience’s shoes to put together a technical document. Writers need to be thoroughly familiar with your target audience.

This implies refraining from unnecessary words that your audience will not understand. Stick to using a simple yet engaging language.

It is no secret that technical writing is a time-consuming process. That does not mean you can rush through it! Never skip doing your research. Your document should be clear and accurate. I also recommend creating an outline before drafting a document. This will ensure a logical structure.”

“Apart from the content, you cannot forget about the presentation. Use various formatting tools to make your document aesthetic and easy to understand”, concludes the expert.
