In a high-pressure system, a plug valve is a flow control device used to regulate the flow of a liquid or gas. Plug valves can be used to control flow through simple moderate throttling, an on/off state, to divert or combine flow, or both. The flow via plug valves, which have a simple mechanical design, is controlled by rotating cylindrical or conically tapered "plugs" inside the valve body.

The plugs inside the valve have one or more hollow channels that cut sideways through the plug when the valve is open, allowing fluid or gas to flow through the plug. Plug valves are used for directional flow control, regulating fluids with suspended solids, such as slurries, managing gas or liquid fuels, and low-pressure, low-temperature applications.
