Pliers: It would be a poor tool box that didn't include a pair of pliers. Perhaps the basic slip joint pliers are the most important, but it would be nice to have a pair of some of the others, too, especially the stripping, locking and needle nose types.

Tape Measure: Where would you be without a tape measure on almost any job? You don't want the dressmaker type of tape measure for your toolbox that only goes to five feet. Get the heavy duty, sturdy, retractable, metal type that measures up to 25 feet and you're good to go.

Hacksaw: If you can only have one saw in your hand tool collection, go with a hacksaw. It is lightweight and user friendly and will cut through an assortment of materials from PVC or metal pipe for plumbing to wood or acrylics. A hacksaw is versatile and can come in immensely handy. Be sure to choose one that will accept interchangeable blades and use the blade best suited to the job.
