The WNBA was added to 2K's collection three years ago when it launched NBA 2K20. It's somewhat of a surprise that it's taken so time for a female player to be on the cover, particularly considering that 2K Sports often releases multiple versions of the game starring various athletes. For instance, 2K21 featured Damian Lillard on last-generation console versions and Zion Williamson on Series X and PS5 versions. There was also the special "Mamba Forever" edition that was named in honor of Kobe Bryant.

This time, Dallas Mavericks' star guard Luka Doncic will be included on the cover, while the NBA 75th Anniversary Edition cover depicts NBA legends Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kevin Durant. Another edition features the Washington Wizards' Rui Hachiura. This edition will only be made available in Japan.

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, Chicago Sky and WNBA outstanding Candace Parker and Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant are among the stars who will be featured on the next NBA 2K video game release that the company announced on its website today.

In celebration of the NBA's 75th season, which is scheduled to begin in, NBA legends Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Dirk Nowitzki will also grace the cover of the NBA 75th Anniversary Edition (along with Durant). Parker will be the first WNBA player to grace the cover of NBA 2K in the GameStop Exclusive edition.

Durant graced the cover NBA 2K13, along with Blake Griffin (and Derrick Rose) in the past. Doncic and Nowitzki are the first Mavericks ever to be on the covers of the game's long history. Abdul-Jabbar, Durant, and Nowitzki all posted on Twitter to announce their spots on the cover. Abdul-Jabbar said it was "a incredible experience" having been featured on the cover. Durant and Doncic both called being named as cover athletes an honor while Nowitzki made fun of it by tweeting: "Not sure who these others are, but it's an enormous honor to be on cover of NBA2K22.
