A new quest isn't going to bring in very many new or returning players in contrast to and PvM content that being in a significant and very noticeable number of returning and new players. Management also frequently overestimates how quickly they could develop content, which contributes to material like Winter 2017, and at times they'll just scrap the project entirely to cut their losses, but with Mobile, they must be extremely confident in how many new subscriptions it could bring in and also their ability to tap into the mobile program mtx market they think that it's well worth it to continue development at the detriment of other endeavors, regardless of how much longer it's taking to start compared to first estimates.

This leads to problems for players because there's frequently long dry runs of little to no content (was not there like a whole 5 or 4 month stretch last year that was all just patch weeks? And they were all really short patch weeks also ), that is especially detrimental for participant retention of top level players, the ones that maintain their subscriptions for the longest, providing the most secure and consistent source of earnings. Higher level players can attain their in-game goals far faster than lower levelled players, plus they'll"complete" new content comparatively quickly. Without smaller updates like quests and dead content updates in between bigger updates to keep them occupied, they will move on to other matches.

That is great for management as well as the bankers, for the time being, however, the compounding issues and problems that stem from this kind of management philosophy will gradually lead to a tipping point in which the reduction in player numbers will no longer be offset by mtx revenues.

There will probably also be an additional tipping point where mtx purchasing players will start to depart because an mmorpg with so few players quits being fun, particularly if there's no one to show off to, so that they take their mtx bucks to another game. It's why so many mobile games funded solely by mtx have such a short lifespan, the bigger playerbase starts to depart after the fad dies out, and the mtx purchasing players follow suit since it isn't fun anymore when there is not that many players to compare themselves to or show off. It makes the organization's whole revenue stream unreliable and shaky.

This will make Jagex and RuneScape a bad advantage, especially because banks will be less inclined to provide loans and potential investors will be less inclined to invest if there is not a stream of earnings and increasing profits. And rather than attempting to fix things, the shareholders will likely vote to just scuttle the entire property, chop up the residual assets and sell them off in a fire sale to decrease their losses until it becomes entirely unprofitable, because that is how they function, that is how they have been making a lot of cash for decades, and that is how they'll continue to do so with different companies they are invested in, since it's always worked for them, so they will continue to tell management this is the way they want them to function.
