Regular Maintenance of Cesspools and Septic Tanks Important for Healthy Living

Humans produce plenty of solid and liquid wastes on a daily basis. There are appropriate waste and drainage management systems that have been developed to manage the sewage and garbage.

But they are mostly underground, and not directly visible or accessible. Because of this reason, the regular maintenance of waste management systems can sometimes be ignored. Thus, it is essential for both the public and government to ensure that areas like sewers, septic tanks, and cesspools are well-maintained.

Cesspools and Septic tanks – What’s the difference?

Septic tanks are underground storage chambers used to treat wastewater with the help of certain bacteria. As dirty water flows into the septic tank, solid wastes get deposited to the bottom of the tank while other decomposable waste products get collected at the top. The deposited solids at the bottom are called sludge and the waste floating at the top is called scum. In between the scum and the sludge, clean water remains which then flows put through an outlet pipe.

Cesspool is a simple underground storage space that can collect wastewater, but it does not treat the water. They are not very sanitary and are not even allowed in most places. However, they can be useful in remote areas that are far away from central sewage systems. For sanitation purpose, cesspools must be emptied from time to time or they can overflow.

Maintenance of Cesspools and Septic tanks

It is always desirable to live in a clean and healthy environment. No one wants to willingly reside in an environment that lacks proper sanitation, as it increases the risk of many diseases. So there should be no reason to explain why it’s necessary to maintain a clean and functional septic tank or cesspool. If they are left unattended, the wastewater can be absorbed by the surrounding soil, or it can overflow to the surface.

Especially in populated areas like New York, there is a huge production of daily waste. In such areas, an overflowing septic tank can not only be a problem for a particular household but also to the surrounding people. So instead of letting the problem get out of hand and looking for last minute solutions, people need to be prepared beforehand. The New York State Department of Health has also issued guidelines for the maintenance of septic tank system in New York which needs to be followed mandatorily.

A properly maintained septic tank can provide years of wastewater treatment. But it is essential that it’s cleaned and regulated within every 2 or 3 years by a licensed Cesspool & Septic Tank Service. The main thing about the maintenance of septic tanks is that the sludge must be removed in every few years. Professional services can do this in less time, using pumps and other required equipments.
