Plano, TX, – The life of a diabetic is like a carefully controlled tightrope walk. Stray a little to either side of the blood sugar line and the ramifications can be grave. A new study, however, is providing hope for those who find their type 2 diabetes is influenced by obesity. Researchers have found that weight loss surgery can provide diabetics a big boost in keeping their numbers under control. For some, the implications might even be even more promising.

“The benefits of weight loss surgery for diabetics can be rather profound,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas-based Nicholson Clinic, one of the top weight loss surgery centers in the country. “The latest research indicates that some type 2 diabetics might experience a reversal of their symptoms in the months and years after surgery when ideal weight is attained and maintained.”

Dr. Nicolson is referring to a study that was recently published in JAMA Surgery. To arrive at their findings, researchers followed 52 obese patients who underwent weight loss surgery. Another 299 patients involved in the study were provided with standard medical interventions to address obesity.

Five years out from surgery, researchers found those in the surgical group had attained an average BMI of about 24.5. Those in the medical group saw their BMI drop, on average, to 29. Those in the study who happened to have type 2 diabetes also had strong results. In the surgical group, about 36 percent of patients saw their symptoms reverse. Another 28 percent of surgical patients saw a partial reversal of their condition. In the medical intervention group, only about 1.2 percent enjoyed a reversal. Another 1.6 percent saw a partial reversal.

“While more research is necessary to gauge how the results stand up over longer periods of time, the initial findings add to the growing body of evidence that supports weight loss surgery as an intervention for those with obesity-related diabetes,” says Dr. Nicholson. “People who are obese are urged to explore all their options for losing weight to help prevent or better control a variety of health concerns. Weight loss surgery is the right choice for some.”
