The production of PET bottles is carried out in stages. Typically, PET bottles used to hold drinking water and other beverages are made of polyethylene terephthalate because the material is both strong and light. In order to understand the manufacturing process, it is helpful to first check the composition of the polyester and how this affects the PET bottle.

Polyester is a thermoplastic polymer that can be either opaque or transparent, depending on the specific material composition. Like most PET, polyester is produced from petroleum hydrocarbons by the reaction between ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. In order to produce PET bottles, the polyester is first polymerized to produce long chain molecules.

Polymerization itself can be a complex process and explains many of the inconsistencies between a batch of produced polyester and another batch of produced polyester. Usually, two impurities are produced during the polymerization: diethylene glycol and acetaldehyde. Although the production of diethylene glycol is usually insufficient to affect the polyester, acetaldehyde can be produced not only during the polymerization but also during the bottle manufacturing process. The large amount of acetaldehyde in the polyester used in the manufacture of the bottle gives the inside of the beverage a strange taste.

Once the PET itself is manufactured, the bottle manufacturing process can begin. To ensure that the polyester is suitable for use, extensive testing is performed after production to check if the bottle is impermeable to carbon dioxide (this is important for bottles with soda). Other factors, such as transparency, gloss, shatter resistance, thickness and pressure resistance, are also carefully monitored.
