A filling is a method to restore a tooth to its normal shape and function that was damaged by decay.

When a dentist gives the patient a filling, he or she at first eliminates the decayed tooth material, then disinfect the affected area, and then fills the cavity with a filling material. A filling also assists in the prevention of further decay by not allowing the bacteria to enter the spaces.

Discolored fillings may be caused by staining from things that one puts in the mouth or by leaking around the edges of a filling. If the discoloration is due to the cause of a leaking filling then the development of dental decay will eventually take place. The tooth may require an extraction or root canal treatment if the discolored fillings are left for too long. If the discolored filling is due to the presence of staining then the filling will continue to darken and become more unsightly over the period of time.

Various reasons to replace discolored fillings are:

i. Decay under or around the filling
ii. Older fillings
iii. Gaps or open edges between the filling and tooth
iv. Exposure to high staining drinks like tea, coffee and red wine
v. Smoking
vi. Poor oral hygiene

A cavity or tooth infection generally takes place when an overgrowth of bacteria produces holes in the outer, hard layer of the enamel. The infection of Wisdom teeth may take place as they are harder to clean. Thus the infectioncan be caused by the food and bacteria which gets trapped among the tooth and the gums.In unique cases, the infection can advance to other areas of the head and mouth.A partially impacted wisdom tooth has a higher chance of getting infected. This is due to the reason that its angle and shape make decay more likely to happen.

Treatment for an Infected Wisdom Teeth may involve:

i. Dental work to repair it
ii. Surgery for removal of tooth
iii. Medication to treat the tooth

The dentist in this instance will inspect the teeth and will take an X-ray of the area. This will assist in determining what kind of treatment is best for the tooth.

If the wisdom tooth is seen to be damaged then the dentist may completely or partly eliminate it. One may also need dental surgery for the infection of an impacted wisdom tooth. This assists to avert future infections.

The dentist may also eliminate the gum tissue from the top of an impacted wisdom tooth to help it to develop. Another dental method called coronectomy eliminates only the top part of a wisdom tooth. This helps to safeguard the nerves, tooth and the jawbone around the tooth.
