A professional radiologist describesa PET scan and how it is used in treating patients.

Irving, TX - PET Scans locate and identify cancerous cells in the body. This is done using a radioactive tracer programmed to target cancerous cells. Malignant cells are different in structure to healthy cells in the body. The radioactive tracer differentiates healthy cells from cancerous cells by its behavior and structure. The PET scan will pick up this information and form an image of the cells and where they are located. This is then printed in 3D for analysis.

“This 3D image gives a clearpicture through which one can tell the cancerous tumor easily,” explains one radiologist. “Before a PET scan is performed, a patient is advised not to eat a few hours prior. This is because eating may tamper with the clarity of the images. The metabolic activity of the cancer cells is different from healthy cells, which will be detected by the radioactive tracer. This type of technology is used on most types of cancers except brain cancer. This is because brain activity is high throughout. It lasts for about 20 minutes to an hour, depending on how fast the cancer cells can be located.”

It is important to note that:

• PET uses fluorodeoxyglucose, a type of radioactive glucose, to detect cancer cells within the body. Cells take up this glucose, where an element called Fluorine-18destructures and releases gamma rays and positrons. Because of the cancer cells’ nature to thrive on glucose, it will continue to feed on the glucose, therefore, producing more gamma rays. This causes them to illuminate more, which solidifies their location.

• Doctors are then able to tell the size of the tumor and how fast it has spread through the body. The illuminated area shows the cancer tumor. Radiologists can then plan for the type of treatment available to you.

“PET scanning has helped transform the way we as radiologists see cancer today,” says the radiologist.” It is now easier to prescribe treatment because of PET scans.”
